SouthGate shopping centre fire believed to have been started deliberately

A blaze at the SouthGate shopping centre yesterday evening, Monday 6th June, is believed to have been started deliberately, Avon Fire & Rescue Service has said.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at 9.11pm on Kingston Road in the centre of Bath.

Crews from the Bath, Hicks Gate and Kingswood fire stations were sent to the scene, where they found a fire in the loading area of the shopping centre involving three wheelie bins and a waste compactor.

Firefighters used one high pressure hose reel, one 45mm jet, three thermal imaging cameras and a triple extension ladder to extinguish the blaze.

Crews also used ventilation fans to clear smoke from the area. Two firefighters wore breathing apparatus for safety.

The cause of the fire is thought to be deliberate.
