The M4 has been closed westbound between Chippenham and Bath this morning due to a serious collision, with a diversion put in place along the A420.

The incident happened on the westbound carriageway between Junction 17 of the M4, Chippenham, and Junction 18, Bath.

A full closure has been implemented by Highways England while the emergency services work at the scene.

Traffic is currently being diverted via the ‘Solid Diamond’ diversion route.

The diversion route is as follows:

  1. Leave the M4 westbound via the J17 exit slip road and head south on the A350. Continue on the A350 until you come to the A420 junction.
  2. Turn right and join the A420.  Continue on the A420 for approximately 10 miles until you reach the A46.
  3. Turn right and join the A46. Continue on the A46 until you come to the M4/A46 roundabout.
  4. Turn left and re-join the M4 westbound at J18.

Road users are being advised to leave extra time for their journeys, and consider alternative routes if possible.

The motorway is expected to remain closed for a number of hours.
