Fire crews urge locals to keep windows closed due to fire on Salisbury Plain

Avon Fire & Rescue Service is urging residents across Bath and the surrounding area to keep their doors and windows closed, due to smoke and haze in the air from a significant fire on Salisbury Plain.

The fire service received multiple calls regarding smoke and haze in the air above Bath, and have advised locals to keep their windows and doors closed as the fire continues.

Wiltshire Police have closed off the A360 between Shrewton and West Lavington due to poor visibility on the road due to the fire.

In a tweet, the force said: “We are aware that the smoke and smell of burning is noticeable across a large section of the county.”

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said that the ongoing fire in the impact area of Salisbury Plain is being monitored by the military, but is creating a a smoke plume that is spreading across Steeple Ashton, Trowbridge and as far as Bradford on Avon and Bath.

Smoke, and a strong burning smell, is expected to continue across the area throughout the day.
