The winner of this year’s B&NES Council Libraries Young Crime Writers’ Competition is Flora Jenner, aged 15, from Batheaston with a suspense-filled story called ‘Chase’.
In second place was Tia Wetten, aged 14, also from Batheaston, with ‘Black Rose’ and in third, Sophie Anderson, aged six, from Newbridge, with her story ‘The Queen’s Jewels’.
Five other stories, written by Ruby Browning, 10, from Timsbury; Rebekah Bolton, 10, from Keynsham; Harry Brain, 10, from High Littleton; Jack Gould, 10, from Hallatrow, and Tom Barton, 12, from Newbridge, were Highly Commended.
All the winners attended an awards’ ceremony at Bath Central Library on Wednesday 29th April.
First prize was a Kindle, funded by Bath Spa University, and a trophy, funded by the Bath Chronicle.
Second and third prizes of book tokens and books were provided by Mr B’s Emporium of Reading Delights.
This year’s judges were writers Jeff Dowson, Sandy Osborne, David Lassman and Nigel Smith. Shortlisted stories featured terror, kidnaps, and speaking library books that led a young girl to crime.
