As young people across Bath and North East Somerset sort out their applications for undergraduate student finance, they are being reminded that bursaries are available.

Funding for those who want to study Maths, Engineering or Physics at university is offered by the R W Barnes Bursary Fund, which was set up in 2007 through Quartet Community Foundation to offer financial aid to undergraduates living within postcodes including BA and BS.

To date, the Quartet Community Foundation has awarded 284 bursaries totalling £285,590 to help local undergraduate students.

The grant programme closes to applications on 9th July 2021 and the maximum award is £2,500.

Julie Newman from Quartet Community Foundation said: “Ron Barnes, a Somerset businessman and scientist, was passionate about giving young people opportunities.

“Ron set up his fund with Quartet in 2007, and when he sadly passed away a few years ago this fund increased thanks to his generous legacy.

“Due to Covid, and the very uncertain past 12 months, many young lives have been put on hold.

“But Ron’s generous gift means that today many young people can get some financial help to get on with their lives and progress towards their chosen career.”

Students, parents and carers can find out more and apply at https://quartetcf.org.uk/grant-programmes/r-w-barnes-bursary/ or email Julie Newman via [email protected].

Eligible postcodes include BA, BS, TA, DT, SP3/7/8, SN10/12/13/14/15 and GL9.
