Thousands of children across Bath have been designing firework safety posters as part of an annual campaign to keep youngsters safe on Bonfire Night.
The Rotary Club of Bath has been organising a poster design competition in local primary schools, run with long-standing sponsor, Bath Building Society, for over 40 years.
This year, despite the challenges of COVID-19, over two and a half thousand children from 40 schools across the area took part, and the winners were congratulated at a special ceremony held in the Guildhall, hosted by the Mayor of Bath, Cllr June Player.
Rotary President, Simon Spalding, said: “When you compare the figures for fireworks accidents per head of Bath and Bristol, it is interesting that Bath’s figures are lower.
“Decades of engaging children with a firework safety message, in a fun and creative way, must be at least part of the reason.”
Prizes for the most effective and creative posters were awarded in four age groups from 4 to over 10, and to entries from special schools.
The winners all received a voucher for £25 for a Bath Building Society account together with a 250-piece art set.
Simon added: “The involvement and support of the Building Society is crucial, not least in printing thousands of special poster sheets for the children to put their designs on.
“It’s a great example of engagement with the local community by a local business, in a way that makes a real difference to health and safety.”
The winners and their schools were:
- Age 4-5: Albert from Moorlands Infants School
- Age 6-7: Molly from St Saviours Junior School
- Age 8-9: Khaliah from St Saviours Junior School
- Age 10+: Fionn from Farmborough Primary School
- Special Schools: Isaac from Threeways School.
The winner of the Bath Building Society cup for best poster overall was Fionn.
