Pupils at Bathwick St Mary Church School in Bath went on a litter picking spree earlier this month as part of a campaign by local councillor Dr Yukteshwar Kumar.
On 7th July, more than 30 pupils and staff went litter picking and collected four full bags of rubbish.
In the process, pupils learnt more about why littering is anti-social, the damage it does to the environment and the risk it poses to wildlife.
Councillor Dr Kumar, who represents the Bathwick ward and started the initiative, said: “It was encouraging to note the amount of dedication and involvement of the pupils in picking the litter and understanding about the damage they create.
“I have not seen schools being involved in the litter picking activities previously in our city and all the teachers and pupils of Bathwick St Mary school must be congratulated for this stupendous work.”
The headteacher at Bathwick St Mary’s, Mr. Kevin Purkiss added: “At Bathwick not only do we seize every learning opportunity but also seek to be good neighbours to those around us and responsible citizens of our city.
“Children enjoyed the afternoon and importantly it spurred many on to take even greater care of our environment.”
Councillor Dr Kumar has said that he will organise a series of activities in the ward for the “Greener Bathwick, cleaner Bathwick” campaign.
