St Mary’s C of E Primary School in Writhlington will be celebrating the official opening of their new two classroom teaching block today, Wednesday 18th October.
The classrooms were required to enable this popular school to meet the growing demand for school places in the area. It has expanded from 140 to 210 places.
The Chair of the Council, Councillor Cherry Beath, and the Honorable Andrew Jolliffe will be performing a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a tour of the new facilities.
A dance performed by pupils of the school’s Dance Club, singing and a cream tea will mark the celebrations.
Councillor Paul May (Conservative, Publow and Whitchurch), Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “In their 2014 Ofsted report, inspectors noted the high regard in which parents of children attending St Mary’s held the school.
“I’m delighted that the addition of these classrooms will enable more children to attend.”
Sue Jones, joint headteacher at St Mary’s School, said: “The whole school community is delighted with our newest addition – these two new classrooms now give us a complete school environment to be proud of, one which will provide for the learning of all young children in our community for the foreseeable future.”
Cathie Lampert, joint headteacher, added: “The state-of-the-art building will allow us to operate as a single-form entry school for the growing number of children currently being enrolled.
“The children love the light airy classrooms and were even involved in choosing the colour schemes for their own rooms. We would like to thank everyone who made this possible. ”
Staff and children moved into the new £700,000 classroom block at the start of the autumn term.
Lord Hylton, owner of part of the school site, kindly gifted a piece of land to allow the new classroom block to be built.
The project was funded by Bath & North East Somerset Council and managed by Project Delivery in association with the Schools Capital & Organisation Team within the Council’s People and Communities Directorate.
The building was designed by BBA Architects of Bath and the main contractor was Oakland Construction. Work started on site in February 2017.
