Pupils and their families from Monkton Prep and Senior School are putting their pedalling power to the test by cycling a staggering 10,659 miles, the equivalent distance from Bath to Sydney, for charity.
Pupils from Nursery through to Senior school will be coming together for the challenge which takes place on Sunday 19th June at the Odd Down cycle track in aid of Bath-based charity, Send a Cow.
Around 600 people are expected to ride approximately 20 miles each throughout the day.
The emphasis is on the whole school family working together to achieve a great feat with everyone’s effort making a difference no matter how large or small.
The event organisers Jonny Goode and Ed Coombe, from Monkton Prep School, said: ‘‘We’re expecting children as young as two to take part and are encouraging parents, grandparents, staff and friends to join in.
“It’s a mammoth challenge but when broken down it should equate to around 17 circuits of the track per person. It’s going to be a really fun day and a great way to raise funds for a much-loved local charity.’’
The school is hoping to raise a pound for each mile cycled for Send a Cow. Set up by West Country dairy farmers almost 30 years ago, the charity works with some of Africa’s poorest people, providing them with training, tools, seeds and livestock to grow their own food and lift themselves out of poverty.
The cycling challenge is a step up from the school’s ‘Swim the Channel Challenge’ which they held last year, collectively swimming 147 miles and raising over £7000 for Hope 4 Harmonie appeal.
