Students from Bath Spa University recently enjoyed a talk from Maisie Williams, best known for her role as Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, celebrating the creative industries.

The event, which was the first leg of her university tour and held at Bath Spa University, gave students the opportunity to hear first-hand about how Maisie broke into the creative industries in her teens and became an international TV star by the age of 21, and how she is now venturing into tech entrepreneurship.

Maisie talked about why she co-founded Daisie with business partner Dom Santry, and how creative, talented students can benefit from the platform.

Launched in August, Daisie offers young people the opportunity to network, share and collaborate on creative projects, helping to bypass some of the obstacles that can prevent new talent from gaining valuable experience and recognition.

Maisie said: “Previous to Daisie, success in the creative industries has been wholly dependent on luck and ‘ins’ to the industry.

“Daisie introduces a new way into the creative world; through connections made organically and the natural development of your skills, propelling individuals to the next level. We’re so excited to facilitate the future of creative collaboration.

The event was part of Bath Spa University’s WorkFest – a month organised by the Careers team encouraging students to find their own path and highlight the variety of opportunities open to them when they graduate.

It gave students a chance to meet one of the region’s most exciting actors, and hear first-hand what a successful career in the creative industries can be like, as well as pick up some tips of the trade.

Vanessa Doust, Business Liaison Manager at Bath Spa University, commented: “Giving students a mix of creative and entrepreneurial skills necessary for future success is a huge focus at Bath Spa University, so we were thrilled to welcome Maisie to talk to our students about her career, and the launch of Daisie.

“She is a huge inspiration to many of our students here, and a fantastic role model for young people.”

Bath Spa University is one of the UK’s leading universities for creativity, with BAFTA, Costa and Bailey’s Prize award winners amongst its teaching staff.

To help take the stress out of applying, Bath Spa is offering students applying for the 2019/2020 intake a guaranteed place if they can demonstrate they have the passion and talent to succeed – and guarantee accommodation.

Students that exceed their predicted A-level grades will receive a financial incentive of £750.
