‘Impulsive’ woman walked out of Co-op without paying for shopping

A Bath woman who walked out of the Co-op in Southdown with a basket full of items has appeared in court to admit shoplifting.

On 9th May, Harriett Attinger stole household and food items to the value of £95.65 from the shop in Mount Road.

Bath magistrates heard that the 33-year-old, of Gay Street, has 16 previous convictions for 34 offences, nine of them are theft related.

Representing Attinger, solicitor Bradley Axam said she clearly struggles with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder); she has never had a formal diagnosis but is going through the channels to get help.

He told the court that she is “very impulsive and does not think about the consequences”. She had been struggling with her mental health since her ex-partner sent their children away to boarding school and felt she had “lost her purpose”.

Mr Axam added that Attinger, who is a qualified accountant and has recently started a new marketing job, is keen to repay the Co-op for the items she stole.

At the hearing on Wednesday 6th August, she was ordered to pay £95.65 compensation and £85 prosecution costs.
