A woman has been arrested in connection with the theft and use of bank cards, following a burglary in the Bathwick Hill area of Bath on Tuesday, 30th January.

Officers were called just before 6am on Tuesday to a house off Bathwick Hill, after the householder woke to find someone in the property and found a wallet had been stolen.

The stolen bank cards were used at shops in the city soon after the burglary and officers arrested a woman that evening.

Police are taking the opportunity to remind everyone to make sure their doors and windows are locked when they’re not in the same room, and once it gets dark.

It only takes an opportunist thief a moment to creep in and steal small valuables like handbags, wallets, keys or jewellery, while you’re in another room.

Everyone can help to keep our communities safe by reporting suspicious incidents. If you see someone acting suspiciously around a neighbour’s property, call police straight away.

If they’re obviously breaking in, ring 999. Otherwise, call the non-emergency number 101: operators are on hand 24/7.

To keep your own home secure:

  • Lock up and set the alarm, if you have one, at night as well as when you go out;
  • Make sure your door is locked by turning the key – some ‘paddle and stub’-handled doors might seem to be locked by lifting the handle, but can still be opened from outside;
  • Never leave the key in the lock or in sight of the letterbox;
  • Fit a letterbox cage;
  • Fit motion-sensing security lights around your property;
  • Keep tools locked up in a secure shed or garage;
  • Make sure garden furniture and wheelie bins can’t be moved to gain access to upstairs windows;
  • Join Neighbourhood Watch.

More home security information, including details of Neighbourhood Watch, can be found at www.avonandsomerset.police.uk.
