Police in Bath are continuing to tackle the issue of ‘cuckooing’ – where drug dealers take over the home of a vulnerable person and use it as a base.

Offenders often target the homes of people whose background means they’re less likely to contact the police. To combat this, officers in Bath have been working with a number of partners to identify vulnerable people and make sure they feel confident about coming forward to report incidents.

Officers also carry out visits to check on the welfare of vulnerable people.

On Tuesday 17th July, officers became concerned about a man in his 50s living at flats in Morford Street. in Bath. They forced entry into the property and seized a significant quantity of suspected heroin and crack cocaine.

A man from Newham, London, and a teenage boy from Barnet were both arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of drugs and later released under investigation pending further enquiries including forensic testing of the suspected drugs.

Officers also seized weapons including a machete and a home-made cosh from the property.

Police have increased their patrols and put measures in place to ensure the vulnerable man’s safety.

Officers have asked the community to get in touch with them with any concerns about vulnerable individuals. People may notice strangers coming and going at all hours, or unfamiliar vehicles or bicycles at the address or their routine may have changed.

If you’re uneasy about someone, get in touch with the police online through www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/contact, or by calling 101.

If you’d prefer not to talk to officers, you can tell the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never ask your name or trace your call.

Help and support is available for drug users and their families through DHI (Developing Health & Independence). Call 0800 0733011 for free and confidential advice.
