Motorists are being urged to avoid the A36 near Bath due to power cables falling onto a nearby road after a pylon was hit by a light aircraft.
Emergency services are on scene at the junction of the A36 and A366 Farleigh Road, where the power cable came down at around 2.10pm today, Wednesday 23rd August, after the collision involving a light aircraft.
The A36 has been closed between the Beckington roundabout and the junction with the A366, while the A366 Farleigh Road has been closed between Bath Road at Norton St Philip and its junction with the A36.
Avon & Somerset Police say the road could be closed for up to 12 hours.
The pilot, and sole occupant, of the plane is not believed to have suffered any significant injuries.
The Air Accident Investigation Board has been notified about the incident.
A small number of properties are currently without power.
Signed diversion routes are in place and National Highways has advised drivers to plan their journeys and find alternate routes while the closure remains.
The Wiltshire Air Ambulance landed at the scene shortly after the collision.
