A 60-year-old man who admitted assaulting three police officers has been sentenced by Bath magistrates.

Julian Brokenshire, of Blagdon Park at Whiteway, appeared before the court in September to admit assaulting the officers on 20th July and a further charge of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to a fourth police officer.
Brokenshire had been lashing out and spitting. At the time, he had suffered a severe injury to his hand and had been intoxicated.
Magistrates had ordered pre-sentence reports and granted Brokenshire unconditional bail to return to court on 7th November. He had been warned that custody was one of the options under consideration.
Brokenshire has previous convictions, with the last one being almost 10 years ago.
At his appearance on 7th November, the magistrates heard that he has no memory of the incident of 20th July but is remorseful.
Brokenshire had been a rough sleeper for many years but now has accommodation. He takes medication for BPD (borderline personality disorder).
He is already taking steps to help himself regarding his alcohol problem and has been voluntarily engaging with DHI (Developing Health & Independence). A support worker from the organisation accompanied him to court.
Brokenshire was given a 12-month community order with nine rehabilitation activity requirement (RAR) days and a six-month alcohol treatment requirement.
He was also fined £80. No compensation was awarded to the police officers as they had not suffered injuries.
Brokenshire was ordered to pay £40 towards prosecution costs and a £114 surcharge, which goes towards funding victim services.
