Man punched and kicked club-goer after knocking back 20 drinks

A man knocked back 20 alcoholic drinks before going to a Bath night club where he ended up punching and kicking another man in the head.

As Jack Condick was sentenced last week, he was told he was lucky to be standing in a magistrates’ court, rather than a coroner’s court, as inflicting such injuries to someone’s head could prove fatal.

The incident happened at Komedia in Westgate Street on 21st December last year.

Condick was ejected from the club by security and lost consciousness during restraint.

He was arrested and during the journey used abusive language including a reference to “f****** immigrants”.

At Bath Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 22nd July, 20-year-old Condick, of Holcombe Grove in Keynsham, admitted a charge of assault by beating and a racially aggravated offence of using threatening or abusive language likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

The magistrates were shown photos of the marks that Condick inflicted on his victim.

Solicitor Maxine Twynam, representing Condick, who had no previous convictions, said he had consumed 20 alcoholic drinks that night before going to Komedia.

She said that when he’d watched the police footage of his behaviour “he felt sick” and was “genuinely remorseful”, adding that he had cut his alcohol consumption to ensure he is never in this position again.

Condick is currently only doing “cash in hand” work, and if he was given a community order with an unpaid work requirement, it would give his life some structure, Ms Twynham told the court.

After stressing to Condick the seriousness of the matters for which he was before them, magistrates imposed a 12-month community order under which he must complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

He was ordered to pay his victim £500 compensation, fined £200 and must also pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £114 court surcharge.

As Condick left the dock, chair of the bench Mark Pilgrim told him: “Let’s not see you again.”
