Derek Barker, 90, of Winsley Hill at Limpley Stoke, appeared in court charged with three offences under the Sexual Offences Act 1956.
The charges relate to offences allegedly committed in the mid-1970s at the independent school where he taught.
Magistrates were told the alleged offences were so serious they could only be dealt with at the Crown Court.
The case was adjourned until 27th June, when Barker is due to appear at Bristol Crown Court when there will be a pre-trial preparation hearing.
He was granted unconditional bail.
