Nearly 240 people were arrested for drink and drug-driving in the Avon & Somerset Police area in July as part of a targeted roads policing operation.

The roads policing unit took part in Operation Spotlight, a national initiative aimed at reducing fatal and serious injury road traffic collisions by tackling the ‘Fatal Five’: speeding, distraction (including use of a mobile phone at the wheel), careless driving, failing to wear a seatbelt, and drink/drug-driving.

Strategically timed during July, when busier roads lead to a peak in fatal and serious injury collisions, Operation Spotlight in Avon and Somerset detected:

  • 8,699 speeding offences
  • 239 drink/drug-driving offences
  • 79 careless driving offences
  • 20 seatbelt offences
  • 16 distracted driving offences.

Chief Inspector Rob Cheeseman, head of road policing and road safety, said: “Last year, 63 people were killed in 55 incidents on our roads. For every dangerous driver we take off the road, a potential tragedy is prevented.”

If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, report it online, call 101, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111. If it’s happening now, call 999.
