Avon & Somerset Police have launched an appeal for witnesses and information after a memorial to children killed in the 1942 Bath Blitz was vandalised.

A metal cross was broken off, and the plaque bearing the names has been scratched to show offensive language.

The plaque will be removed for repair.

The damage to the monument in the memorial garden in Shaftesbury Road was discovered on Tuesday 19th August, and reported to the police the following day.

Officers have said it’s not clear when the damage happened. A full investigation is under way.

Police are aware that a small number of people have repeatedly engaged in anti-social behaviour in the area, and are committed to working with the community to tackle this problem.

There’s no evidence of any political motivation, and officers are currently treating this as an act of mindless vandalism.

If you have any relevant footage or information about how and when this happened, call 101 and give the reference 5225235726.

Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers 100 per cent anonymously by calling 0800 555 111, or online at https://crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information.
