A new zebra crossing has been installed in Lower Oldfield Park by Bath & North East Somerset Council, to improve the safety of school children who have to cross the road.

Hundreds of pupils from Hayesfield Girls’ School cross the busy road every day getting to and from classes between the school’s two sites. The zebra crossing means they, members of school staff and other pedestrians now have a safe place to cross the road.
In addition to the zebra crossing, speed cushions and a rearranged parking layout have also been implemented to further improve safety.
Councillor Mark Shelford, cabinet member for Transport and Environment, said: “To have such a large number of schoolchildren rushing to cross the road during gaps in traffic is not an acceptable situation.
“Considerable work has been put in over the last couple of years by the council’s safety and design teams to enable a dedicated crossing to be put in place and I am delighted that pupils can now cross the road safely.”
Roger Williams, Governor at Hayesfield Girls’ School added: “We have worked closely with the council’s road safety team over the last few years to enable a crossing on Lower Oldfield Park, which was badly needed to reduce the risks for our pupils and staff.
“The installation of traffic calming measures last year and now the zebra crossing itself are enormously welcome and we are grateful for the time and effort put in by council officers and the support of Councillor Ian Gilchrist to make this happen.”
