B&NES Council has approved detailed repair work to a Georgian column at the Thermae Bath Spa after it was severely damaged by a lorry during the Christmas Market.

The column is at the front of the spa in Hot Bath Street and is part of the Grade II* listed Old Royal Baths complex.

On 6th December, a delivery lorry reversed into the column, causing significant fracturing and the loss of about 8.2cms of the column’s stonework.

As part of emergency works, a temporary propping arrangement was installed to ensure public safety and the structure of the building.

Because of the severe damage, it is not possible to repair the column in situ. Instead, it must be dismantled and reconstructed.

The council approved the application for listed building consent last week, 22nd May.
