Wessex Water offers advice for residents to ensure their homes are ‘winter ready’

With temperatures predicted to plummet in the coming days, Wessex Water is advising its customers across the Bath area to make their homes ‘winter ready’.

Frozen and burst pipes can cause flooding damage and leave homes without water, but a few simple steps can minimise the risk during a cold snap.

Ashlea Lane, director of water supply at Wessex Water, said: “A good first step is to make sure you know where your stop tap is and check it’s working.

“It’s also important to fix any dripping taps or overflows, make sure pipes are insulated and keep a local WaterSafe qualified plumber’s details to hand in case you have a leak.

“Every winter we’re called out to help customers who have been caught out by cold weather and suffered damage to their homes, so it’s better to be prepared.”

Wessex Water’s top six winter tips are:

  • Make sure you know where your stop tap is and check it’s working.
  • Fix any dripping taps or overflows – this will also save water.
  • If you’re going away, consider leaving your heating on and set the thermostat to 14C.
  • Make sure all roof and vulnerable pipes are insulated and your boiler is serviced.
  • Make sure you have the name and number of your nearest WaterSafe qualified plumber to hand.
  • Get a neighbour to look in occasionally if you go away.
