A new voluntary group in Bath has taken a step closer to helping local adults learn to read after appointing a new coordinator following a recruitment drive last November.

Miranda Matthews will join Read Easy Bath, which was established at the end of last year.

It is estimated that up to 4000 adults in Bath struggle with basic literacy. The Read Easy group will provide one-to-one coaching thanks to a growing team of volunteers.

The management team and coordinator are now completing the necessary training, prior to confirming and training reading coaches and will then start pairing coaches with learners.

Miranda, who has a background in journalism and documentary making, said: “I’m delighted to be part of Read Easy Bath and am looking forward to matching our first coaches and learners.

“Obviously, the pandemic is slowing us down, but we are determined to have everything in place so that we can offer one-to-one coaching as soon as possible.”

If you are, or know of, an adult who would like help learning to read, now is the time to come forward.
