Vault works could impact city centre traffic for around 18 months

Works taking place on a vault near the Roman Baths could cause traffic disruption in the city centre until the end of next year.

The closure in place

Bath & North East Somerset Council announced on 4th June that Stall Street would be temporarily closed for investigative and remedial work on the vault starting the following day.

At the time, the council said it was not yet clear how long the work in the vault would take.

But it has since issued a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) closing Stall Street from approximately five metres north of its junction with York Street, and Bath Street from its junction with Stall Street.

The order started on 26th June and runs for a maximum of 18 months. The restrictions will be as and when traffic signs are in position and may not be for the whole of that time.

Stall Street is usually closed to vehicles from 10am to 6pm but the closure is now 24 hours.

Pedestrian access remains at all times, including to the Roman Baths.

The TTRO also allows two-way traffic by suspending the one-way restriction on:

  • Hot Bath Street between Lower Borough Walls and Beau Street
  • Bath Street for its entire length
  • Lower Borough Walls for its entire length
  • Stall Street for its entire length
