Dorothy House Hospice Care is inviting local people to sign-up before 30th September to take part in their adventurous Trek Nepal challenge in April 2020.
Taking place between 25th April to 6th May 2020, a group of intrepid walkers will trek the breathtaking Himalayan Mountains to raise funds for the charity, to support vital patient care across Bath and North East Somerset, Somerset and Wiltshire.
As part of a twelve-day trip, participants will take on a five-day trek in the Himalayas and enjoy stunning views of the snowy peaks of the Annapurna Mountains, stay in quaint locally-owned teahouses and enjoy learning about Nepalese culture.
Dorothy House’s team of trekkers will also spend two days volunteering at Hospice Nepal near Kathmandu, assisting with light gardening, painting or decorating work and finding out about the challenges of delivering palliative care in rural Nepal.
Two information events on Trek Nepal are being held, the first is at 7pm on Tuesday 24th September at the Bath Brew House in Bath and the second is from 7pm on Thursday 26th September at Dorothy House, Winsley near Bradford on Avon.
Dorothy House nurses will be speaking at both events about the valuable work of the Hospice, and the full itinerary of the trek and volunteering challenge to Nepal will be available as well as fundraising tips on how to raise money.
Verity Clark, community fundraiser at Dorothy House said: “Dorothy House provides free, compassionate palliative and end of life care and support for people with a life-limiting illness, their families and carers and our work touches the lives of many local people.
“By taking part in this trek in the Himalayas for Dorothy House and raising sponsorship you will help fund valuable care for our patients, their families and carers.
“As well as supporting Dorothy House a highlight of the trek will be visiting Hospice Nepal to tackle much-needed maintenance work.
“This is an unforgettable challenge that will stay with you forever and your fundraising will help us provide vital patient care at Dorothy House.”
Steph Millard, aged 29 from Bath, who is taking part in the Trek Nepal challenge in 2020 said: “This April I sadly lost my older brother at the young age of 33 due to bowel cancer.
“The care, love and support Dorothy House gave to Benj, myself and my family has just been phenomenal and is ongoing.
“In memory of him, I want to do something to give back to the Hospice and as I’m turning thirty just before the trek I wanted to set myself a big challenge to mark a new decade.”
David Symington aged 67 from Bath, added: “I’ve wanted to visit the Himalayas for many years, so taking part in Trek Nepal to support the hospice that cared for my wife Caroline, before she died in 1994, has perfect synchronicity.
“Twenty-five years on I’m lucky to be able to fulfil this long-held dream and be fit and healthy enough to take on this challenge.
“I’m looking forward to spending time hiking and enjoying the spectacular mountains of the Himalayas as well as raising funds for Dorothy House, a charity which is close to my heart and relies largely on funding from the local community due to limited government funding.
“If this trekking experience appeals to you as much as it does to me, I hope you’ll join me and the other walkers and sign-up for our trip to Nepal next April.”
Hospice Nepal was the first Palliative Care Centre to be established in Nepal in 1999 and cares for patients suffering from life-threatening illness.
The Hospice has a small inpatient unit with eight beds in Lagankhel, near Kathmandu which includes a six bedded General Ward and two private rooms.
The Hospice provides holistic care for patients at the end of life and helps to support their families.
The epic challenge will be the adventure of a lifetime, help raise much-needed funds for Dorothy House and introduce participants to Nepalese culture.
To hold one of the limited number of spaces on the trek, you’ll need to pay a deposit of £395.
Dorothy House offers support and advice with fundraising activities and there is ample time to raise sponsorship before February 2020.
Dorothy House is an independent charity which provides free, palliative and end of life care across 700 square miles, serving a population of 550,000 people across Bath and North East Somerset, Wiltshire and Somerset.
