The two councillors representing the village of Carlingcott on B&NES Council want the speed limit to be reduced to 20mph, in line with the speed limit in nearby Peasedown St John.
Councillors Sarah Bevan and Karen Walker (Independent) believe the change is long overdue and should have been implemented in 2013.
Cllr Sarah Bevan, a veteran road safety campaigner, said: “After much lobbying we managed to reduce the speed limit in Peasedown St John in all roads almost five years ago.
“Carlingcott should have been included in the implementation of the new speed limit then, but was missed out due to an administration error.
“Ever since, residents have been contacting us with concerns about the speed of vehicles and petitioning Cllr Walker and I for road safety improvements.”
Just recently the councillors met with B&NES Council’s Traffic and Safety staff for a walk around Carlingcott. They have agreed to include funding for the speed limit change in next year’s council budget proposals.
Sarah added: “Roads in Carlingcott are narrow with bends, so 20 mph is the only appropriate speed for drivers here.”
Council officers have also agreed to set aside funding to introduce more 20mph repeater signs in both Firgrove Lane and Hillside View.
The road safety campaign is part of a long list of investments the independent councillors want to see in their community.
Cllr Karen Walker said: “We’ll be releasing our long list of funding requests for Peasedown St John in January, but we can confirm that we have asked the council for £40,000 to resurface the road through Lower Peasedown.
“Residents have been asking for this for sometime, so we want to ensure this happens on their behalf.”
If the funding for road surfacing is agreed by B&NES Council it will be made available in the 2018/2019 budget.
