The changes by Bath & North East Somerset Council, which took more than a month, were carried out in phases under road closures and over the Easter holidays to reduce disruption to traffic.
The new raised footway gives the bridge footways on each side. Footways along Chapel Row, Tyning Road and High Street have been widened, streetlights have been improved, and new speed tables have been added either side of the canal bridge.
Councillor Manda Rigby, cabinet member for transport, said: “Whether you’re walking to school or driving through the area, the changes we’ve made in Bathampton mean all highway users will be safer.
“We listened to feedback from the community and know these changes will have a real positive impact and I’d like to thank the residents and businesses for their patience as we delivered these improvements.”
The council worked with the local community to finalise this scheme’s design and made changes to its initial scheme design following concerns raised by residents.
Proposed footway widths were reduced, allowing more space on the bridge for passing vehicles and construction dates were also changed following a request from Bathampton Primary School so that more of the works took place during Easter holidays.
