Bath Rugby legend Lee Mears joined a 750-mile week-long cycle ride to raise much-needed funds for Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby.
The Road to Twickenham cross-country cycle challenge saw Mears join forces with former international rugby stars, GB ParaTri gold medallist Louis Rolfe MBE and local cycling enthusiasts.
A total of 650 cyclists rode from Newcastle to Twickenham, arriving at the home of English rugby in time for the Gallagher Premiership Final.
The group has raised more than £30,000 for Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby, and local Premiership Rugby Foundations.
Mears said: “We are delighted with the amount raised and would like to thank everyone who supported the challenge.
“My body is not built for cycling, but it has been a great challenge to be part of.
“Anything that involves Wooden Spoon deserves my support as the charity stands for everything that I stand for.
“I have done lots of events for the charity and it is always a great chance to meet up with old friends and raise money for a fantastic cause – and the Road to Twickenham was no different.”
Sarah Webb, CEO of Wooden Spoon, added: “The riders were an inspiration and demonstrated our core values of passion, integrity, teamwork and fun throughout the 750-mile journey.”
The group stopped off at 11 of the 13 Gallagher Premiership Rugby clubs along the way before the challenge culminated at Twickenham.
