The station will be opening its doors to the community to raise awareness of the role the fire service plays in water rescue.
It will be open to the public on Saturday 12th April from 11am to 3pm for the fun, family friendly, water focussed event, which is free to all
In 2024, Avon Fire & Rescue Service attended 100 rescues or evacuations from water, highlighting the importance of water safety education.
As warmer months approach, it is crucial for people of all ages to understand how to keep themselves safe in and around open water.
The open day will include:
- A fire engine and rescue boat display – get a closer look at the equipment used in water rescues.
- Interactive, practical activities for all ages to learn key water safety skills.
- Meet and compete with the crew
- Follow the ‘Water Safety Station Trail’ to unlock activities and prizes.
- See what the fire service has planned for the future
Jacq Hardwick, Water Safety Lead CYP at Avon Fire & Rescue Service said: “This event is a great opportunity for the community to learn how to stay safe around water and leave the station with practical knowledge that could save lives in water related emergencies.
“It is vital that young people in our community are water aware and understand the risk of the many hidden dangers in our inland waterways.”
The open day supports the National Fire Chiefs Council’s ‘Be Water Aware Week’ (28th April – 4th – May), which focuses on preventing accidental drownings.
The campaign emphasises the dangers of cold water shock, swimming in unfamiliar areas, and the risks associated with jumping and tombstoning into water without knowing what lies beneath.
