Residents urged to check stop taps as cold weather spell continues

People in Bath are again being urged to check the stop taps in their homes as cold weather continues, to help prevent significant damage if a pipe bursts.

Bath-based water and sewerage company Wessex Water is advising people to seek out their stop tap, which is normally found under the kitchen sink, to ensure they can shut off their supply.

Every year Wessex Water helps hundreds of people whose homes have been flooded internally, often during cold weather when a frozen pipe bursts.

A spokesperson said: “The stop tap is usually under the kitchen sink, in an airing cupboard or an adjoining garage and can be closed by turning it clockwise.

“This shuts off the water and will minimise damage if a pipe bursts. Testing the stop tap regularly is also a good idea to prevent it seizing up.”

Wessex Water has previously issued advice on lagging exposed pipes in lofts and other draughty areas, as well as protecting outside taps with insulting covers.
