The station, formerly known as Bath Hospital Radio and more recently Bath Radio, made its first broadcast in May 1964 to patients at the Royal National Hospital and Royal United Hospital.
Now 60 years on, its mission as a community radio station, as well as still serving the RUH, is to connect listeners from across the city of Bath through music, events, culture, and the arts.
Bath Sound’s chair and station manager, Ollie Lewis, said: “As the longest running radio station in Bath, we are so proud of our 60 years of broadcasting to the patients at the RUH and online to the people of Bath and beyond.
“We hope to soon broadcast on DAB which will mean we can reach a wider audience across the whole of Bath and surrounding areas.
“It’s our incredible volunteers that work really hard to make a station for the people of Bath and we are always looking for more support.”
In 2021 the station merged with BA1 Radio to become Bath Sound. The station is currently working with other local radio stations to fund a DAB application and equipment which would see them reach the people of Bath and beyond via digital radio. As part of the 60th anniversary celebrations there will be a marathon broadcast featuring live shows from 8am to 10pm on Saturday 1st June and Sunday 2nd June.
The anniversary weekend will feature a fundraising campaign aiming to raise money for the station to help continue to train volunteers and run the station connecting people within the city.
