Older people living in Peasedown St John were invited to a free Christmas lunch last Friday at St John’s Close Community Hall, organised and hosted by the village’s Residents’ Association.

Featuring a traditional festive Christmas meal and entertainment provided by local performer Roy Coates, this was the third year running the association has hosted the event.

Chair of the Residents’ Association, Joy Gosz, said: “We would like to thank Brian Millard, our local butcher, who not only supplied the meat but cooked it as well.

“The Coop and Tesco who both donated fresh produce, our local hairdressers for donating raffle prizes, as well as the Post Office and Mandy’s Discount Store.

“Daily Bread supplied mince pies for desert and we are grateful also to Curo Housing for grants to help with event costs.”

In total, more than 30 people came along to enjoy Christmas lunch, and for the very first time used the brand new tables and chairs bought thanks to a £500 grant from Peasedown Party in the Park.

Joy added: “Thanks to the Party in the Park team for their funding – the new tables and chairs will be used at many of our future events in the hall as well.”

Scores of volunteers also came along to help set up and prepare vegetables for the day.

On Saturday 19th December, the Residents’ Association also held a Children’s Christmas Party.

Rose Timperley, local residents and association treasurer, added: “Thanks again to Curo who gave a grant for this event, and to Heather from St John’s Close for playing Mrs Christmas.

“Children were fed, entertained, won prizes and received a present from Santa before going home happy.

“Many thanks again to all who assisted. When communities pull together, good things can happen.”
