A road in Bath is shut for emergency repairs after gas and water leaks.

The closure of Frome Road in Odd Down

Wales & West Utilities is carrying out work at Frome Road, as is Wessex Water.

Temporary signals are in place between the Red Lion roundabout and Bloomfield Road junction.

Drivers are advised that delays may occur, especially during peak travel times.

A spokesperson for Wales & West Utilities told the Echo: “We were called to the Frome Road area of Bath on Wednesday evening (10th September) following reports of a smell of gas in the area.

“On arrival, we found a leak on a gas pipe running beneath the road and began work to make it safe.

“As we worked to locate the leak, we discovered that a water main in the area was also leaking and informed Wessex Water, who are now also in attendance.

“It is not yet known what has caused the damage to both utility pipes.

“In agreement with Bath & North East Somerset Council, and in order to keep people safe while we work, we have closed Frome Road at its junctions with Wellsway and Bloomfield Road.

“A diversion route has been put in place to keep the traffic flowing and this is clearly signposted.

“This is a complex job, and we don’t know how long our work will take. Our engineers will be working around the clock, as safely and as quickly as they can to stop the leak and make the area safe.

“While it’s important that we fix this leak now, it is being constantly monitored and does not pose any wider safety concerns and there has been no impact on local gas supplies.”

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “Wales & West made us aware of a potential water leak at the site of their own repair work this morning (Friday).

“We have investigated and isolated a small area, allowing Wales & West to complete their repair prior to us carrying out a further assessment and repair of our own.’’
