A local nurse is taking on a virtual challenge throughout 2021 to raise vital funds for Bath charity Julian House and the people it supports.
On top of day-to-day life and work challenges, Amy Shawl’s fundraiser will see her travel the entire length of the UK.
Amy’s virtual challenge, which began in January, will see her covering 1,083 miles over the course of 12 months.
She said: “My goal was to run and cycle the distance and any walking will also contribute to the total distance. I have so far completed 50% of the challenge.
“I have run, cycled and walked a total distance of 542.1 miles and have a remaining 541 left to complete before December 31st to have achieved my goal.”
Amy’s managing to fit in her challenge on top of working as a Complex Health Needs Community Nurse across BANES and caring for her nearly two-year-old toddler, who “keeps my partner and I very busy. As a family we love anything outdoors and going on adventures.”
She continued: “I started running around 2011 when I really needed to make some healthier life choices.
“Running is my go-to self-help for mind and body. I love the amazing endorphin post-run rush. This challenge is my way of working towards a goal to keep my mind and body healthy in 2021 when there was so much uncertainty hanging over us all due to Covid-19.
“Hopefully in the process I can raise some money for Julian House. It is such a brilliant charity supporting people who really need it.”
Senior Community and Events Fundraiser at Julian House, Jessica Gay said: “Amy’s a real inspiration. On top of such a difficult year, she has set herself an additional tough challenge to help support even more people in need.
“A big well done to her on her achievements so far and good luck for the remaining miles. Her support will help many people experiencing homelessness in the region and escaping domestic abuse. She’s helping to change and save lives.”
Amy’s hoping to raise £1000 for the charity, and people can choose to support her by donating to her JustGiving page.
