Bath & North East Somerset Council is consulting on plans for a “much-needed” zebra crossing on Whiteway Road.
After requests from residents and local councillors, funding has been secured to install a pedestrian crossing south of the junction with The Hollow.
A report says that pedestrians experience difficulties when crossing Whiteway Road to reach Haycombe Cemetery, Haycombe Veterinary Centre, the garden centre and Roundhill park and play area.
Initial site investigations, traffic and pedestrian count surveys indicated that a zebra crossing would be the most suitable form of crossing.
Following a safety audit in December, a pedestrian refuge island is now included in the council’s design of the crossing.
Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib Dem, Southdown) said: “This is a much-needed crossing and will dramatically improve safety for the many people – especially older residents – who cross over at this point.”
Fellow Lib Dem ward councillor Dine Romero said she was also happy with the proposal but asked if it would be possible to make it a raised crossing to help slow traffic.
However, council officers said a raised crossing is “beyond the scope” of the proposals, but the safety audit had highlighted the road widths as a potential hazard, so a central pedestrian refuge island is now included.
Twerton and Whiteway Lib Dem councillor Tim Ball has also voiced his support for the crossing.
Objections and representations must be sent to the council by Wednesday 19th February. Find out more here.
