Christmas is a time of giving and in the run up to the festive season, Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Councils are giving away some superb prizes just for recycling your food.

As part of the Feed Me and Win campaign, every week, the councils have been giving away a £50 voucher each week to someone in their area who has put their food out for recycling.

From 8th – 23rd December each Council is giving away 12 extra daily prizes worth up to £70.

All you need to do is put your food bin out for recycling by 7am on your usual collection day, making sure the councils can match it to your property (you may want to label it) and you could win a choice of prizes.

Prizes include spa vouchers, a brewery tour, a junior zoo keeper encounter and cookery classes.

Even if you just have teabags or bones left over to recycle, it all helps as your council recycles your food into electricity and fertiliser.

Recycling food is much better than sending food to landfill. Recycling is a cheaper process, and food in landfill produces gases which can contribute to climate change as it rots down.

So, as a thank you, your council is giving away prizes for helping to increase the amount of food that gets recycled.

Councillor Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North), Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: “Christmas is a time when more food is wasted than any other time of the year, so make sure that you’re recycling all you can.

“Even better – find ways to waste less in the first place. Tips such as planning ahead, making a shopping list, storing your food properly, cooking the right amount and making the most of any leftovers all helps to reduce waste and save money too.”

For more information on Feed Me and Win and tips on how to waste less food during the festive season, go to www.feedmeandwin.co.uk which includes contact details for your local Council.

If you want to get started and need a container please contact your council.

To make it easier, in Bath and North East Somerset, from 1st December you can use plastic bags as well as compostable liners or newspaper to store your food waste.  See www.bathnes.gov.uk/wasteservices for more details.

Look out for double value prizes of £100 coming in January. Feed Me and Win is funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

It covers the West of England Local Authorities (Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire Councils).
