Multiple fire crews tackle significant blaze in fields on edge of Bath

Fire crews have this afternoon, Monday 3rd August, been tackling a blaze in fields next to Pennyquick Hill in Bath.

The road was closed by police while firefighters worked at the scene.

A sizeable area of land, along with part of the grass verge, has been blackened by the fire which was reported shortly before 1pm.

People living nearby said flames near hedgerows reached around 40ft.

The roadside sign showing Pennyquick Hill’s gradient has been damaged by the flames.

Fire crews from stations across Bristol have been in attendance, and a drone has been flying over the scene to determine hotspots.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service posted an update on their Facebook page, saying: “We’re currently responding to a large grass fire at Pennyquick Hill, Bath.

“Local residents should keep windows and doors closed to stop smoke from getting into their homes or businesses.

“Please avoid the area to allow emergency services to respond safely. We will provide further updates as more information becomes available.”

A spokesperson for the fire service told the Echo: “At 12:54 PM on the 3rd August, multiple crews from Avon Fire and Rescue Service responded to a grass fire Pennyquick Hill, Bath.

“Firefighters extinguished the fire using multiple hose reels and fire beaters.

“Crews remain at the scene carrying out checks for hotspots. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.”

The fire was extinguished by 7pm.

The field is part of Newton Farm and the owners posted on Facebook: “A very scary afternoon here on the farm, especially with everything being so dry.

“Thankfully, the field had already been cleared of straw and there were no animals nearby.

“A huge thank you to the fire brigade for their incredibly quick response in getting the fire under control. We’re very grateful that everyone is safe.”
