Plans to convert an old telephone exchange on the outskirts of Bath into student accommodation have been approved by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

The building is off Pennyquick at Newton St Loe. It is next to the Globe Inn and close to the main campus of Bath Spa University.

The redevelopment of the building, which dates from the 1960s and is in the Green Belt, will provide accommodation for five students.

Access to the site is described as difficult, with views obscured from up Pennyquick.  However, the site has been designed with sustainable transport in mind.

The proximity to the university, as well as to bus stops and cycle routes linking the site to Bath and Bristol, means no parking has been provided.

Each of the five units of accommodation will have a ground-floor area accommodating a living space with a small kitchen and a bathroom, and a bedroom at first-floor level.

Permission was granted back in 2011 for the redevelopment of the old exchange into three student units but it remains vacant.
