Delays and disruption set to continue as A4 roadworks over-run again

Roadworks on the A4 between Keynsham and Saltford continue to cause delays and disruption for motorists, residents and businesses after over-running due to “complex challenges”.

The works are in connection with Curo’s new Withies Green housing development and have caused long tailbacks along Bath Road since they began on 8th September last year.

The roadworks were originally expected to take 35 weeks. But towards the end of May, a new date of 6th July was announced.

The latest revised completion date of 3rd August has also been hit after the discovery of previously unidentified Virgin Media cables and ducting, which will need to be diverted.

A Curo spokesperson told the Echo it had followed advice from Bath & North East Somerset Council about how these works need to be organised.

“We’re pleased the road has operated safely throughout and allowed two-way traffic flow at peak times. Unfortunately, some disruption has been unavoidable, and the project overrun has been frustrating for all involved.

“This can happen with works of this scale – many services run through the site, and this can create complex challenges that can’t always be anticipated.

“The cycle path installation was required by B&NES as part of the planning permission given for the Withies Green development. We’ve agreed with the council that this work can now be completed by 3rd August.

“The final stages of the project have revealed the presence of undocumented fibre optic cables that will need to be rerouted by Virgin. They will complete this work at a later date – it will not extend the current project.”

There will be 168 houses and 40 flats at Withies Green. Of these, 62 affordable properties will be managed by Curo long-term, with 47 designated for social rent and 15 for shared ownership.
