Work will be starting today (Monday 11th January) to upgrade the traffic signals at the junction between Monmouth Street and Charles Street in Bath.
The existing traffic signals will be completely replaced and the crossing points widened to give better accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
The controlled pedestrian crossing on Charles Street, will also be improved at the same time to a Toucan crossing.
The crossings here both form part of National Cycle Route 4.
The improvements consist of:
- Installation of new signal poles at the Monmouth Street/Charles Street junction, repositioned where practical to allow wider drop kerbing at crossings and reduce obstruction to the cycle path.
- A bigger traffic island at the Monmouth Street/Charles Street junction, giving greater space for pedestrians waiting to cross.
- New advanced cyclist stop lines at the end of Monmouth Street.
- Upgrade of the Charles Street signalised crossing to a Toucan crossing, with wider drop kerbing.
- Repositioning of signal heads at the Charles Street crossing to facilitate a better turning radius for cyclists using the cycle path.
Work is expected to take three weeks. During this time, temporary three way signals will be used at the Monmouth Street/Charles Street junction.
A temporary signal controlled crossing point will also be installed in Charles Street.
