Dorothy House has received a donation of £40,000 following the success of a charity golf day and auction organised by local business The Marble Works of Bath with support from Jeremy Guscott.
A full day of golf on Friday 2nd August at Cumberwell Park Golf Club for 116 people was followed by an informal panel discussion hosted by sports presenter David Flatman, talking to several British Lions rugby players and professional golfer Eddie Pepperell.
Later that evening an exclusive dinner and charity auction was held at the venue.
The Marble Works of Bath is a family-run business and chose Dorothy House as the beneficiary for their Charity Golf Day because of the support their family have received from the Hospice.
Katie McDonald, Director at the Marble Works of Bath said: “The idea for the golf day came about due to our sponsorship of local professional golfer Laurie Canter and our MD, Eddie Mcdonald’s great passion for golf.
“Also members of our family have experienced the wonderful care and support provided by Dorothy House and just one week before the golf day a family member passed away at the Hospice.
“This along with our friendship with Jeremy Guscott, who is also a keen supporter of Dorothy House, helped us decide to raise vital funds for this very worthwhile cause.”
Jeremy Guscott, BBC sports presenter and former England rugby player said: “Everyone knows how important the work of Dorothy House is for local people.
“When your friends or family have been touched by the Hospice’s incredible end of life care, as mine have, it’s impossible not to continue supporting them.
“Funds are needed year in, year out to ensure their essential and free services continue to be there both now and in the future.”
Wayne de Leeuw, Chief Executive at Dorothy House Hospice Care added: “We are overwhelmed with the generosity of all those who attended this legendary golf day and auction in the summer.
“To raise £40,000 is no small feat in one day and it will help us provide more end of life care to our patients.
“Our sincere thanks go to Eddie and Katie at The Marble works of Bath for organising such a memorable fundraising event and to Jeremy Guscott and the professional rugby and golf players who supported the event with such enthusiasm. Well done to all involved.”
The seven unique auction prizes included a signed, 4ft original canvas of boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, created by local artist Emelie Hryhoruk, which raised £7,000 at auction alone.
One of the golf package prizes caused a bidding war between two tables and raised £12,000 for four exclusive team golf days with professional golfers, Eddie Pepperell, Tom Lewis, Jordan Smith and Laurie Canter at their own golf clubs.
Other prizes included two tickets for Ronnie Scott’s Diamond Anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall, several local golf days, golfing equipment and a day of rugby coaching with Bath Rugby at their training base in Farleigh Hungerford kindly donated by Stuart Hooper.
Local charity Dorothy House Hospice Care provides free palliative and end of life care across Bath and North East Somerset, Wiltshire and Somerset.
The Hospice offers support, advice and care for patients, their families and carers who can be referred by their GP or other Health and Social Care professional.
