Charity’s flagship Bath shop on Walcot Street hit by water leaks

The charity Alongside, formerly known as Julian House, is seeking listed building consent to carry out works at its flagship shop in Bath which is suffering from water leaks.

Alongside plans to carry out internal and external alterations, including repair works to the roof to stop leaks at the Grade II* building at 86 Walcot Street.

The application says: “These leaks are adversely affecting the interior condition of the building as well as affecting the commercial performance of the shop.

“The Walcot Street charity shop is the flagship store of Alongside and provides much-needed revenue for the charity’s valuable and important work with vulnerable adults in Bath and across the South West.

“These works predominantly concern the replacement of roofing felt and battens with current standard materials and will re-use all existing roof tiles to match the existing finish.

“There will be some lead refurbishment work to stem leaks in some parapets and valleys.

“There will be some relaying of coping stones and mortar beds and re-pointing of stonework to match the existing finish. All mortar used will be a lime mortar to match the existing finish. All tiles, ridge tiles and coping stones will be re-used.”

Where this is not possible, due to breakages, replacements will be sourced from recycled heritage materials, says the charity.

The planning reference is 26/02716/LBA and the deadline for comments is 27th August.
