A special way of keeping fit is coming to Peasedown St John next month, organised by the village’s new ‘Dementia Friendly Peasedown’ group.
The new Seated SOSA (or chair dancing) classes will kick start at St John’s Church on Monday 7th October.
Project Manager, Nathan Hartley, said: “These new inclusive seated SOSA dance fitness classes give everyone the chance to dance!
“If age, disability or illness have become barriers from stopping you being physically active, these new chair-dancing classes are just for you!”
Using routines that are adaptable for all levels of abilities and health conditions, with special considerations for older adults, Seated SOSA Dance Fitness is an international dance fitness programme.
The new weekly, free sessions include:
- Authentic Dance Moves – All choreography is designed to stay true to the authentic technique of each dance style, just in a chair.
- Fun-packed – Set to a soundtrack of fun and catchy dance tunes to get you singing as well as dancing.
- Promotion of wellbeing – Improve your posture, coordination and cardiovascular health, while meeting new friends.
- Fully inclusive – Adaptable for all degrees of abilities and health conditions, aimed at inspiring older adults to be more active.
Local professional dance teacher, Kay Alford, will be running the classes. The free sessions are open to anyone.
Nathan added: “Every routine is broken down into easy-to-learn sections which can be delivered at different speeds and levels of difficulty, providing a safe and effective workout for everyone to enjoy.
“Physical activity is incredibly beneficial for older adults to help to reduce the impact of illness and chronic disease, prevent memory loss and cognitive decline, and enhance mobility, flexibility and balance.
“Dementia Friendly Peasedown wants to help older adults lead a more independent life, provide much needed social interaction and help improve confidence.”
The Monday afternoon sessions will be held at St John’s Church, Church Road, Peasedown St John, BA2 8AA at 2pm – and should last no longer than 45 minutes. Refreshments are included.
The first class will be held on 7th October, but organisers need to know numbers of people wanting to attend by Wednesday 25th September.
