A competition by a care home in Bath to inspire budding green thumbs to try their hand at planting a miniature garden has seen a local nursery being awarded first prize.

People of all ages answered the call from Brighterkind’s Ivybank House Care Home to participate in the pocket garden competition, inspired by the home’s ‘Summer of Joy’.

The two-month celebration of events was designed to help residents enjoy the outdoors, fresh air and their friends.

Children from the Midford Road Nursery were encouraged to help staff plant the miniature garden and keep it watered, and their efforts won them the grand prize, a £200 voucher to spend at Hillier Garden Centre.

The entries were judged by the care home’s residents who looked for gardens that were creative, colourful and cheerful.

Marta Szemborska, Ivybank House’s Home Manager, said: “Our residents have had a wonderful time admiring all the entries and we’re so grateful to the many people who took the time to participate.

“We hope the competition has inspired the children at Midford Road Nursery to continue with their gardening activities; they’ve obviously got very green little fingers!”
