The Bath Cancer Unit Support Group has been chosen as the main beneficiary of the Mad March Mile 2022 fundraiser, and people are being urged to sign up for the challenge.

Sean Price and Gretchen Tucker, who started the Mad March Mile fundraiser

Organiser Sean Price started the annual event with his sister, Gretchen Tucker, after deciding in 2014 to run a mile each day throughout March.

They invited others to join them, and the annual fundraiser has continued to grow in popularity.

People can now sign up for the March challenge in aid of the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG) which raises funds for the cancer unit at the Royal United Hospital.

The charity needs to raise £580,000 to buy two surface guided radiotherapy technology (SGRT) cameras for the RUH.

The infrared 3D cameras and SGRT software can track a patient’s position with pinpoint accuracy and help ensure that radiation reaches exactly the right place while avoiding vital organs.

People signing up for the Mad March Mile can run, walk or jog a mile each day or even cycle or swim, as long as it takes a similar amount of time as running a mile (about 15-20 mins).

The cost of entry is £12 which includes a personalised mug hand-made by Trevor Pictor of White Horse Pottery, with £6.50 going to the charity.

Participants can donate additional money to the BCUSG by choosing not to have a mug on the entry form, or by choosing to make an extra donation.

BCUSG chairman Mike Taylor said: “We’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Sean and Gretchen for choosing our charity as the beneficiary for the Mad March Mile 2022.

“We are asking as many people as possible to take part and help us reach our latest fundraising target and purchase cutting-edge radiotherapy technology for the RUH.

“As well as improving the accuracy and safety of radiotherapy treatment, the technology also removes the need for permanent marks on patients which can have a negative psychological impact. So please help us reach our fundraising total.”

The BCUSG also has a number of places for the 2022 Bath Half marathon and is looking for runners to take part in aid of the cancer unit.
