Local volunteers and businesses have been praised for their fundraising efforts on behalf of the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group (BCUSG), which has raised an impressive £5 million to date.

The charity, which has just reached the milestone figure having raised funds for the cancer unit at Bath’s Royal United Hospital (RUH) since 1985, is now appealing for new corporate sponsors and volunteers to support its vital work.

The BCUSG is run wholly by volunteers with support from individual donors and businesses, including Royal London in Bath, where staff have raised £84,097 in total through donations and fundraising activities.

But the three-year charity partnership with Royal London has now ended and the BCUSG is looking for new commercial partners to help fund essential medical equipment for cancer patients at the RUH.

Bath-based online sexual wellbeing retailer Lovehoney also recently donated £1,500 and several of their staff have signed up to run the Bath Half Marathon in aid of the charity.

In addition, the BCUSG recently launched new fundraising groups covering Frome, Shepton Mallet, Midsomer Norton, Radstock and Bath and is looking for additional volunteer helpers from these areas.

BCUSG chairman Mike Taylor said: “Reaching the £5m milestone is a fantastic achievement for a small charity like ours and we couldn’t have done it without the amazing efforts of all our volunteers, donors and business supporters.

“We would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Royal London who really did pull out all the stops with their fundraising efforts for the charity. But we need more businesses and volunteers to join us and ensure we can continue with the important work we do on behalf of cancer patients at the RUH.”

To make a donation to the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group, or to discuss becoming a corporate partner, email Alan Webb at [email protected] or phone 07896 741233.

For more information about becoming a volunteer, contact BCUSG chairman Mike Taylor on 07714 087102 or email [email protected].
