The Record Office, which is located in the Guildhall, has been closed to the public since lockdown began in March.
The new measures will include rigorous cleaning of public spaces, quarantine systems for documents, hand sanitiser stations, screens, QR codes for users of the NHS Covid-19 app to scan, and signage to encourage physical distancing.
Staff will wear face coverings, and visitors will also be required to wear them.
In order to limit the number of people in the search rooms at any one time, anyone wishing to visit the Record Office should make an appointment at least 48 hours beforehand.
Documents and books should be pre-ordered where possible.
Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community Services at Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “It’s great news that Bath Record Office is reopening with these additional safety measures in place.
“We look forward to welcoming people back to use our collections after six months of closure.
“The Record Office is an invaluable resource for anyone wishing to find out about the history of our area – whether studying a specialist topic or researching their family history.”
Bath Record Office: Archives and Local Studies will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 29th September.
There will be two bookable sessions each day: 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm.
