Bristol Water is carrying out emergency repairs to a massive burst water main at Charlton Road near Keynsham which looks set to be closed until next Friday, 11th July.

A reported 500,000 litres per hour have been leaking and Charlton Road is closed from the junction of Redlynch Lane to Charlton Field Lane, with Allotment Lane also closed.

Charlton Road links Keynsham and the A37. The main burst late on Wednesday night.

Today, Friday 4th July, Bath & North East Somerset Council said it is aware that the main diversion route is placing pressure on the surrounding network and is doing its best to keep routes as clear as possible while repairs are under way.

Charlton Road was closed for several days last July near the junction with St Ladoc Road after a water main burst and in June 2022 a dam had to be built across Charlton Road, after a burst.

At the time Avon Fire & Rescue Service crews dug trenches to keep direct the flow of water away from properties on the Bilbie Green estate.

Local councillor Andy Wait (Keynsham East, Liberal Democrat) said: “My view is that the increasing number of burst water mains and power cuts locally is due to the infrastructure creaking due to the significant number of extra houses added to the system in the last 14 years.”
