Residents at a care home near Bath recently enjoyed a special animal therapy session with two alpacas, Alfred the Grey and Almond.
The pair, who visited the Shockerwick House Bupa Care Home, were provided by Alpaca Adventure, a company which facilitates wellbeing-orientated alpaca activities.
The residents made the most of the occasion, spending the afternoon cuddling and playing with the alpacas in the gardens of the home.
The session was designed by the care home staff to support the wellbeing of the residents, including those who find the presence of animals calming and mood-boosting for their mental health.
Brionne, the activity coordinator at Shockerwick House, commented: “I came across Alpaca Adventure online and thought they’d provide a fantastic experience for our residents.
“As soon as I mentioned it to our residents, they were all so excited and I knew I had to make it happen.”
Those at the care home have long been animal fans thanks to Chester, the resident cat.
Brionne continued: “Whilst we love all our animal friends who pay a visit to the home, Alfred the Grey and Almond provided an experience like no other.
“They were both so lovely and the residents really warmed to them. I have a feeling we will have to have them back for more cuddles again soon.”
Sylvia Curtis, a resident at Shockerwick House, commented: “The alpacas were so wonderful – I was surprised by quite how soft and friendly they were. It was one of my favourite afternoon activities we’ve ever had!”
As the event was such a success among staff and residents, the home hopes to plan more animal visits over the next few weeks.
