More than 20,000 poppy seeds have been sown in Peasedown St John to mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, as part of a project led by local community leaders.
The project, led by Karen Walker and Sarah Bevan, saw seeds sown at the southern-approach to the village next to the A367 by-pass last Saturday afternoon.
Cllr Sarah Bevan (Independent) said: “With this year’s Remembrance Sunday being hugely significant as it commemorates the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, Cllr Walker and I wanted to do something extra special to remember this historic occasion.
“Peasedown residents lost their lives during both World Wars, and subsequent wars thereafter. So, it was only right that we planted these poppy seeds in their honour.”
As well as poppy seeds, the councillors also led a campaign last week to display large, hand-crafted poppy signs around Peasedown St John.
Cllr Karen Walker (Independent) led a team of school children and parents on Wednesday afternoon, which saw 10 large poppies pinned to road and street signs.
She said: “Thanks to all the school children, parents and members of Peasedown St John Residents’ Association, who helped last week to ensure our village made its mark to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice.
“We had a fantastic afternoon turning Peasedown poppy-red. When local people come together and work as a team so much more can be achieved!”
